Global warming – the time to act is now
A new report from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has painted a worrying picture of the future of planet earth. The report was signed off by more than 230 scientists across 60 countries, and forecasts global temperatures surpassing 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by 2050. Furthermore, without immediate and widespread cuts to carbon emissions, the report claims it will be impossible to limit global warming below 2 degrees by the year 2100.
The IPCC also warned that extreme weather events will become far more frequent as global temperatures continue to rise. Indeed, the report was released against the backdrop of an increasing incidence of wildfires, floods and hurricanes, devastating parts of Europe, the US and the rest of the world in recent months.
Our view
The consequences of a warmer planet are becoming increasingly apparent as time goes by, most recently with the wildfires spreading across parts of Europe. Many countries have already pledged to reduce carbon emissions with the aim of slowing or reversing this warming, but we expect that faster, large-scale action will need to be taken. There will be risks and opportunities for many asset classes, and we continue to believe that a responsible investment approach would be prudent for long-term investors looking to stay abreast of this transition.
